Drawing Expressions Part III: How to Draw Scared and Surprised Faces

In this part, I drew a very scared and surprised face. I started constructing the head which was oriented in an upward angle. I drew it first with a sphere, and then I drew in the mandible. Because of the previous lessons, I managed to make it without so much difficulty. After drawing the head, I then added the mouth. LaurieB! said that yourself is your best reference when it comes to drawing any expressions. As for this part, which is the lips, I tried looking into the mirror for about 10 seconds to see the curves of my lower and upper lips when I’m scared.

Then after the head, I drew the eyes, eyebrows as well as the lines along the bottom of the eyes. This is where the expression is pushing the cheeks up against the lower eyelids. The eyebrows if you will notice are flowing along the same curve.

Adding more details and just by looking at the end result of the example image was a bit challenging to me. It looks a little complicated because of the small details added. But as what I have learned from the previous lessons, I just focused my attention on the individual parts and not the whole image so as to avoid overwhelming myself with what to draw first. The nose was one thing I paid attention to compared to the other features which were straightforward. Take note that whenever you draw a nose for female characters, it is important that you keep it light and delicate. Practice makes it perfect. So whenever you’re in doubt about drawing in the nose always refer to the tutorial video. It’s worth spending a few extra moments to practice just like what I did.

After adding on the details, I tried on putting teeth on my character. If you’re not confident on how to put or where to place the teeth perfectly, you can check the tutorial video on the face fundamentals drawing series. As for my case, I managed to draw it without so much difficulty including the tongue.

I finished the drawing by adding some light lines to show the hair and the neck. I also put in a little bit of shading and highlights on the eye.

My experience in drawing this scared/surprised expression was fun. I learned that you are the best reference when you want to draw any kind of expression. Just by looking up at the mirror you’ll be able to see the difference. You just have to focus your attention to the details and just practice.
