Basics of Sketching on Location

Artists in the past did not have cameras to take pictures of the events they wanted to draw. That's why sketching on location has become a necessity. Being fast is essential to capture details. Sketching on location is all about getting important details for future piece that will serve as a guide for a bigger piece.

I have started sketching on location not long ago. I have followed these simple and direct steps on the basics of sketching on location. Since this is the first time I will do this, I have decided to follow the drawings on the video, and this serves as a practice so that in the future it will be easier for me to do it on the field.

First thing to do is to choose a good location and the subject of the drawing. I have started it by observing the drawings first. I took important details like their clothes, form, the things they are doing at the moment, things they are carrying, the environment, and other details that were essential. Since sketching is not about being totally accurate, sketching loose forms does not matter as long as the event is portrayed well in the sketch. That the viewer will be able to know right away what was going on in the drawing.

The second step is to focus on the focal points of the subject. In the first drawing the important details are the outline of the body, the contour and folds of their clothing and the jacket being carried by one on the right. I focus on getting these details than any other things in the drawing. Aside from the two bodies on the right in the first drawing,

I also take into account the girl on their left. At first I am not really sure if the girl is just walking pass through with her hands on her shirt pocket or is she pushing something like a cart maybe. But since that is not my subject I did not give extra attention to that detail yet consistency also matter. I have decided to make it a girl who just passed by because the drawing looks like an outdoor setting. I also put the other details from the drawing like the glass window and the cabinet inside it.

After few strokes and lines I have produced a sketch of an event. The happenings and the setting was fully provided. Within a few minutes I have sketched a scene.

I have encountered few problems in doing sketching on location, at first I have doubt what was the setting is all about but as I observed well the drawing I was able to come up with my own understanding of the event. I also in doubt since sketching must be fast as much as possible to capture the details, and me as a beginner is not used to draw really fast.

However, in following these steps on sketching on location, sketching becomes quite easy. It doesn’t really matter if the drawing looks cartoonish as long as important details are shown.

I have learned that sketching on location is about being fast and fluid. It doesn’t matter if it is not totally accurate as long as the important details are there. The great thing about following these basics on sketching on location is that I was guided well and I was able to know the important things that should be considered in my drawing.
