WARNING: Don’t Even Think of Learning to Draw Until You Have Read This!

When I started to learn drawing the first thing I had to learn was: "All beginnings are difficult".

Perhaps you have experienced the same problems?
Everywhere there is good advice, or to be more precise: good meant advice. Also I heard often "you cannot draw". You may have heard the same. Often it is followed by a sentence like "you are too old", "you are too young", "you don't have enough time", etc ...

Well, I proved them all wrong. Through the years I learned: anyone can draw as long as he gets the proper instructions for a good start.

But how to get started?

Learn Drawing from Piles of Books?

Imagine: Piles of books amassed in my room. What was meant to be an atelier soon looked like a branch of the local library. Don't mistake me, I really love books, especially when they are about art and drawing. But having to crawl through all of them to learn drawing? Not a very promising outlook.

And then the confusion when reading the books. One book tells you to do it in this way, the other book wants you to do it in another way. Two art authors have three or more opinions how things have to be done. And they always show you only the nice-looking results of their work - but never clear and precise step-by-step instructions.

Learn Drawing from other Artists?

Did you notice? A good artist who knows how to draw does not necessarily know how to teach. Other artists even don't like to share their knowledge or charge hundreds of dollars for a handful of short lessons.

If they share their knowledge at all, they often focus on their own way and their own style. That doesn't help much as you need to develop your own style and way.

And of course we have to fight the challenges of learning drawing itself. I remember countless drawings and pictures that started well but went downhill at some point. Especially for acquiring precision and accuracy I needed to draw and draw and draw again.

So finally I resorted to do it my way. I collected and compiled the best exercises from different sources, teachers and freed them from ideological ballast and stylistic prejudices.
